Abstract

To create conditions necessary for fostering psychological wellbeing is one of the main tasks of psychological support to the military. This empirical study aims to confirm the link between a cognitive component of psychological wellbeing and personality cognitive style. The sample consisted of trainees of one military academy. The authors exploited the questionnaire Individual Style of Cognitive Behavior by O. N. Manolova and A. N. Gusev to investigate the cognitive styles of the military trainees. The key criterion was the number and symmetry of positive selections per each dichotomized scale. The results obtained testified to quite wellbalanced cognitive styles of the cadets: the scale Dependence-Independence showed a maximum internal scatter – 26 %, which means that the respondents tend to rely on their knowledge, experience, and skills in terms of average orientation to external social features. Scales Impulsiveness-Reflexivity demonstrated a minimum scatter – 6,2 %, which characterizes the trainees as cold-blooded and self-composed while making decisions, quick in decision making under uncertainty. High Reflexivity values indicate that trainees have a penchant for balanced and thought-out decisions rather than impulsive ones. The harmony of the development of these cognitive styles means that depending on the particularities of professional activities the military cadets can act both impulsively and on a balanced basis.

Keywords psychological wellbeing, cognitive styles, cadets, military service.
