Abstract | With the rapid spread of Internet technologies and growing Internet addiction among youth, it is relevant to study personality constructs that can be a determinant of this disorder. This problem set the objective of our study – to examine the linkage between proneness to Internet addiction in young people with different types of character accentuation and coping strategies. The sample of 102 respondents aged 20–27 responded to the following psychological measures: the K. Leonhard’s Accentuation of Character Classification, the Folkman & Lazarus Ways of Coping Questionnaire, Internet Addiction scale. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient and the Kruskal & Wallis produced the data processing. According to the results of the pilot study, people with such types of accentuations as demonstrative, affective-exalted, emotive, cyclothymic, and pedantic types, are more prone to Internet-addiction. Among coping strategies preferred by young people were distancing, seeking social support, escape-avoidance, a positive reappraisal. The authors also diagnosed specific symptoms of addiction; tolerance, compulsiveness, poor time management ability, intrapersonal problems. The results obtained can be used for providing preventive assistance to people who are at risk of Internet addiction. |
